Executive Summary

There have been many contestations asserted by different scholars on whether roles of strategic management and strategic leadership were the same. The vast majority of scholars elaborated the two terms in holistic manner and the common conclusion reached is that they are different theories but the skills should be possessed an individual, provided that the two theories are correlated to each other. This paper intends to elaborate to what management and leadership refer and their relationships (see section 1.1). They are usually possessed by the executive management member of a corporate. However they are many different styles of leadership which might lead to diverse impacts (see section 1.2). From a macro point of view, those impacts arising from different leadership styles can be utilized in various situations to optimize their effects (see section 1.3). Citing the universal theories from various scholars, so called Transactional and Transformational leadership, in addition to the leadership styles mentioned in section 1, the consolidated theories are applied to insurance industry as examples and how they influence the management and leadership in the organization (see section 2.1). Yet not all styles are suitable for the selected organization and thus some leadership theories are adjusted to accommodate the need of organization (see section 2.2). However, in nowadays rapid-changing economy, there are always external influences the organization may come across in the coming decade. Leaders, taking writer’s organization as example, are expected to possess certain skills to cope with impact arising from the existing and changing influences (see section 3.1 & 3.2). Once the influences and the relevant skills to cope with are identified, development plan should be established for nurturing new leaders (see section 4.1). Finally, the plan will be on-going evaluated and fine-tuned to ensure the goal is reached (see section 4.2).
